The challenge

Baxter’s previous packaging, when exposed to extreme heat, caused the spoilage of temperature-sensitive products. It needed a high-performing packaging solution to step in and protect its products during customer distribution.

Planet Protector’s Solution

WOOLPACK shields Baxter’s products from heat and moisture. Our insulative wool-based packaging has reduced the spoilage of drugs and ultimately cut down on Baxter’s costs.

Introducing Baxter

Baxter is an American multinational healthcare company that has invested heavily in Australia and New Zealand for over 50 years. The company has pioneered significant medical innovations that have changed healthcare; it works with a wide range of hospitals to ensure that vital medications are available when and where they are needed.

Baxter’s challenge: lack of effective thermal insulation

Before WOOLPACK, Baxter was using foil and bubble wrap to transport its temperature-sensitive drugs. However, when exposed to extreme heat for an extended period of time, the foil did not provide sufficient insulation to maintain the required temperature within the package. Faced with strict regulations and the risk of spoilage, Baxter knew it had to find an alternative.

While the switch to WOOLPACK was driven primarily by a need for better insulation, sustainability played an important role too. By introducing WOOLPACK, the company demonstrated its commitment to sustainable materials and added to its reputation as a responsible manufacturer.

“This demonstrates our commitment to advance our responsibilities around product stewardship”

We conducted over 200 tests with Baxter to ensure WOOLPACK met the specific thermal stability requirements. With our proactive approach, we closed the deal in 2021.

The result: protection against heat and moisture

WOOLPACK is proven to have superior insulation properties. Wool fibres have a unique structure that naturally traps air pockets; these air pockets act as insulators, reducing the transfer of heat. It keeps cool air close to the surface and prevents the penetration of external heat. Foil, on the other hand, reflects radiant heat but is limited in preventing heat transfer in extreme environments. In Australia’s and New Zealand’s scorching summers, this is not enough.

The transition to WOOLPACK has provided increased protection from heat and has reduced the spoilage of temperature-sensitive drugs, ultimately cutting down on Baxter’s costs.

Furthermore, WOOLPACK protects Baxter’s products from moisture. Foil does not absorb or release moisture, so it does not contribute to the cooling effect that moisture-wicking materials like wool provide. As moisture evaporates from the wool fibres, it takes away heat, creating a cooling sensation.

Baxter’s sustainability has taken a leap and we are proud to be a part of its journey. WOOLPACK helped Baxter reduce its carbon emissions and exemplify its dedication to corporate responsibility. In 2022, it reduced absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 1.7% compared with 2021 and 1.3% compared with their baseline year of 2020.
